FOB, CFR or CIF? Choosing Incoterms for sea freight

Who pays freight, who carries the risk, and where the price stops.

  • FOB: seller delivers on board at origin port; buyer books freight and carries risk from loading.
  • CFR: seller also pays freight to destination port, but risk still passes at loading.
  • CIF: as CFR plus minimum marine insurance arranged by the seller.
  • For reefer cargo, agree who controls set-point instructions and data-logger evidence.
